Wimmera Health Care Group is very excited to announce that the communities of the Wimmera and Southern-Mallee have raised more than $1 million for Rachael’s Wish.

Wimmera Cancer Centre Project Steering Committee Chair Richard Goudie said since the Rachael’s Wish fundraising appeal was launched in June 2015 to raise funds for the Wimmera Cancer Centre, $1,012,202 has been raised.

“Thank you. To every single person or business who donated and held fundraisers, thank you,” Mr Goudie said.

“We had a goal of a minimum $1 million in community fundraising and to have reached that goal so quickly is evidence of how strongly our region supports this project.

“With the community funds and the funds received from both State and Federal Governments, this centre will now become a reality.”

Board of Management Chair Angela Murphy said the Wimmera Cancer Centre will see an increase in the number of people able to receive cancer treatment locally, as well as providing improvements in the services of dialysis and community-based palliative care.

“The Wimmera Cancer Centre will enable more people to receive  the treatment they need, close to their support networks and with less time spent travelling on the Western Highway,” Ms Murphy said.

“We would especially like to thank Dr Don Johns and the Wimmera Health Care Group Foundation for their early commitment and dedication to this project.”

Mr Goudie said that while the minimum target of $1 million had been reached, donations would still be welcomed.

“While $1 million was our minimum target, all  funds raised above that will be used to improve the fit out and equipment at the Wimmera Cancer Centre,” he said.

The Wimmera Cancer Centre Fundraising Appeal was named ‘Rachael’s Wish’ after Wimmera woman Rachael Littore expressed her wishes for a new centre following a cancer diagnosis and treatment in 2013. Rachaels Wish has been fully embraced by the communities of the Wimmera Southern Mallee.
