Wimmera Health Care Group’s Health Promotion team is encouraging Horsham residents to hit the pavement and get active by joining one of six walking groups around town.

Health Promotion Officer Hannah McKinlay said more than half of Australia’s adults are not physically active enough, and walking groups provide an opportunity to get some exercise in a friendly environment.

“Sometimes the first step towards a healthier lifestyle can be the biggest one. We make sure our walking groups are welcoming and friendly with a walk leader who will provide some encouragement,” she said.

There are six walking groups to choose from during the week, departing from May Park, the Salvation Army, Southbank, Rasmussen Road, Sawyer Park and Coughlin Park. Each group walks for around 30 to 60 minutes.

“Each walking group provides a chance to get some fresh air, walk at your own pace and meet some new people. Some people come on their own, and have made new friends while they walk. Some people come in pairs or small groups and make it a social outing as well as exercise.

“Even making a small change to your daily routine – such as going for a 30 minute walk – can have a positive effect on your health. Our walking groups are a really good way to start doing some more physical activity.

“People can then gradually build up their exercise levels, knowing they will feel good because exercise improves blood pressure, cholesterol, heart health, as well as muscle and bone strength.

“Everyone is welcome to join a walking group and there is no commitment to attend every week. All you have to do is turn up and look for the walk leader in the high visibility vest,” she said.

Walking groups meet at the following locations - Tuesday 9.50am, meet at May Park Toilet block; Tuesday 11.30am, meet at Salvation Army in Kalkee Road; Wednesday 6.30am, meet outside 3WM building in Southbank; Thursday 8.45am, meet at Horsham Primary School, Rasmussen Road campus; Thursday 10am, meet at Sawyer Park BBQ and Friday 3pm, meet at Coughlin Park Tennis Courts.
